The Stockpile Session at Mountain Creek

It’s official. Hell has frozen over – people will have the chance to snowboard. In Jersey. In May. Thanks to Mountain Creek’s 22′ quarter pipe and a pretty mild spring, there’s still snow to be had.

Those of you that are still sliding spring slush out west might not appreciate such a gift. (Spoiled little brats.)

So! On Saturday, May 22nd, Mountain Creek will be hosting a hike park benefiting the VSMO (Vernon Skatepark Memorial Organization).

Expect to see a few jibs, music by DJ Pat Tyler, a BBQ and a bunch of winter-hungry teenagers shredding on Big Bear from 10am – 4pm. Mountain Creek’s Red Bull Skate Bowl will also be open in the South lodge.

West Coast Tour: Kirkwood & Reno

By the time we hit Kirkwood, our legs and livers were shot. We took a few runs in the whiteout (because, apparently it snows everywhere we go) and checked out the park. Hugh and Joe slid a c-box for the first time, successfully might I add.

After shredding, we got on the road to Reno – where debauchery, delinquents and old people live harmoniously. We found some good Italian food and some even better statues, nearly getting us kicked out of said restaurant.

The vacation came to a close and we all went our separate ways. Some of us were lucky enough to continue on at Whistler Blackcomb. (Screw you, Joe.) Check out the rest of the pictures from our trip on Facebook.

West Coast Tour: Northstar-at-Tahoe

First of all, Northstar’s village is crazy – Stratton-esque. The shuttle system is also pretty convenient. Oh, and A+ for the bathroom in the middle of the parking lot! Two cups of coffee and an hour drive later makes you appreciate those little luxuries. (And the fact that I didn’t need this… Ew. Gross.)

So we took the gondola to the base area from the village. It was surprising finding a relatively small mountain. I guess the village scene and grandiose shuttle system gave us different expectations.

The park at Northstar is very similar to Carinthia at Mount Snow and Mountain Creek’s park setup. The whole area is serviced by a high speed quad – each trail branches off into different sized parks. I think we lapped Moonshine and Pinball most of the day. Good stuff.

First time…

- hitting a streetstyle box (Great success!)
- trying a c-box (…though it definitely wasn’t the first time my tailbone felt the repercussions of not doing something correctly.)
- sliding a rainbow box twice my size (Great success 2.0)

West Coast Tour: Sierra-at-Tahoe

We went to Sierra-at-Tahoe after arriving in South Lake Tahoe the night before. The whole area is stunning – lake, mountains, sun and snow.

We started with some park laps through Bashful and Lower Bashful. Super fun features, well built jumps – a good mix of your regular jibs with some more unique things scattered around.

Being a fat kid at heart, I have to mention the food. Great made-to-order sandwiches (check out the “Happy Hippie”). Hugh had a Cobb salad that could have been sent from the heavens.

After lunch, we went to the top and literally lapped the run under and around the lift, appropriately named “Dynamite.” Deep powder, amazing trees lines, steeps, natural jibs, cliff drops… If the mountain hadn’t closed on us, we would’ve been there all night.

First time…

- dropping a cliff (Enormous cliff pre-drop in. Standard boulder post-drop in.)
- sliding a legit natural log (Yeah. How ’bout dem apples, Bear Grylls? Boom.)
- left wanting more. (Though, night riding in the trees would have been both dangerous and scary.)

Best day ever. I <3 Sierra-at-Tahoe.

West Coast Tour: Lake Tahoe

We bid farewell to Mammoth Lakes and drove through the desert for part 2 of our trip: Tahoe. The whole contrast from desert to mountains in the same scope is unreal. It really makes me wonder why anyone lives in ugly places… (Myself included.)

$75 in gas, a bathroom break in a creepy casino and a few ridiculous pictures later, we were on our way to South Lake Tahoe. A pit stop in Carson City was a must. In ‘N Out burger. Duh.

First time…

- being in Nevada (Oh hi, casinos… at every corner.)
- eating In N’ Out burger (Food is amazing. The religious paper products? A little creepy.)
- driving through the desert listening to Bruce Springsteen (Jersey, yet appropriate.)
