I definitely agree with the faces of the various sports you've listed ie: Tiger, Jordan, Ali... etc. Even Shawn Johnson was made out to be immortal by the media. The media picks our stars for us. However, you can't deny Phelps' athletic ability and achievements. Times have changed. Technology has improved drastically. On paper, he is the greatest Olympic champion of all time. I think he's an inspiration... a perfect example of positive thinking, determination and passion all working together to reach a seemingly impossible goal. People love heroes. He's our modern day hero. That gives people hope and that's probably where the hyperventilating stems from. The media definitely pushes the hype that surrounds Phelps.
